Queensland Heeler
(Australian Cattle Dog)

This breed is also known as the Blue Heeler, Queensland
Heeler, Hall's Heeler, the American Cattle Dog and the Australian Cattle
Dog. These dogs herd
livestock by nipping at their legs or “heels”. The versatile &
fearless Australian Cattle Dog is the result of 6 decades of cross
breeding. Some of the dogs that were bred to get this highly
intelligent dog include the Red Bobtail, Scotland's Blue Merle Collie
and the Dingo. Wary by nature, these dogs must be introduced to
other animals and people early in their development. This breed weighs 35 to 45

Rat Terrier - Rat Terriers
come in three sizes: Toy, 10 pounds and under 12 inches or less. Mini, 11-18 pounds, 13-15 inches.
Standard, 18-28 pounds, 16-18 inches in height. Colors are: black and white tri, black and white, tan, red,
sable, blue, chocolate, lemon and apricot. They are balanced and beautiful with a short, smooth, sleek coat that has a healthy shine. They are
intelligent, easy to train and are very loyal. Rat Terriers are energetic hunters of small
rodents. Rat Terriers are great companions and will entertain their
family for hours. They get along well with other pets and love children. Red & White Setter

These dogs came close to extinction but are now undergoing a revival.
Just like their Irish Setter relatives, they take more time to train than most
other gundogs. Once trained they make reliable companions. Their
zest for life, especially in their early years, can lead them to injure
themselves more frequently than calmer breeds. These dogs are
intelligent and loyal and make good family dogs. Their white coat has
patches of dark chestnut red. Red flecking can occur over the nose and
the bottom part of the legs but they must have red markings over both eyes and
ears and a patch on the top of the tail. Groom 3 times a week. Red
& Whites weigh 60 to 70 lbs. and stand 23-27" at the shoulders.
Redbone Coonhound - These hounds have been common in America
since colonial times. Of American Foxhound type, it was created by
18th and 19th century breeders who wanted a fast, hot-nosed dog.
The Redbone can work many different terrains and is a good water
dog whose bell-like voice ring out when they tree their
quarry. Today, it is known for speed and a cold nose, meaning that
it can follow an old trail. It stands 21 to 26 inches tall, and a
solid red color is preferred. Weekly grooming will keep the short,
smooth coat gleaming. Rhodesian Ridgeback - This breed's
origins can be traced back to South Africa where it was used to hunt lions and protect its
family. Its short coat is famous for its ridge of opposite facing hair that
travels along its spine giving this dog a very unique look. The Rhodesian Ridgeback
can measure up to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 80 pounds. This dog
makes a great family pet.
Rottweiler - These dogs have been known
throughout Europe since the time of the Roman Empire. This breed was further
developed in Germany where it was bred with other herding dogs to create a very strong
dog. The Rottweiler measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder. Its thick coat is usually black with tan markings. Some training is required. It is
very loyal to its family. Russian Wolfhound
(Borzoi)

Also know as the Borzoi, these dogs probably descended from the
Saluki, Greyhound and a lean variety of Russian Sheepdog. In Russia, Borzoi
is a general term for sight hounds. The size, speed, strength and symmetry of
these dogs made them superb hunters. Today they are mostly gentle and
amenable companion dogs for people of all ages. Their long coat comes in a
variety of colors, white with yellow markings being the most common.
These dogs requires plenty of grooming and exercise. They weigh 75 to
105 lbs and stand 27-31" at the shoulders.
Russo - European Laika - The Russo-European Laika is closely related to the Karelian Bear Laika. Russian breeders crossed the Karelian Bear Laika with the Utchak Sheepdog, an
absolutely fearless and intrepid animal that needn't think twice when encountering
Cerberus or a similarly formidable beast, and the result was the Russo-European
Laika. The Laika is an intrepid bear hunter, also used on boar, moose
and wolf. This dog is by no means a family pet. If this audacity could be focused, the breed would be a true

Saint Bernard - This breed is well
known throughout the world as a life-saving dog. These dogs, which are native to
Switzerland, were bred by monks of the region. The Saint Bernard can measure up to
28 inches at the shoulders. Its thick coat comes in colors of white and
red. Regular grooming is required for this breed and it can be a house pet in a
roomy home. Saluki - This breed originated in the
Mesopotamian region some 5,000 years ago. The Saluki wasn't brought to Britain until
the late 19th century. It gained in popularity and has become well known throughout
Europe. It measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder and is very slender
looking in appearance. This pet enjoys the wide open spaces of rural areas to roam.
Samoyed - Touted as one of the most
beautiful dogs, this Spitz-family member was discovered by people who stumbled upon the
Samoyed's Indian tribe in Northern Siberia. It was then brought to Europe in the
late 1800's and brought to North American soil in the early 1900's. The Samoyed
stands an average of 23˝ at the shoulder. This breed makes a devoted,
fun-loving family pet. Sarplaninac
(Sharplaninatz) - This
Yugoslavian native sheepdog is one of the oldest dogs of that region. The
Sarplaninac is a strong-bodied dog standing an average of 24 inches at the shoulder. Its thick, long coat comes in shades of cream to gray. This well mannered dog
is very loyal to its owner and makes a great guard dog for home and property.
Schipperke
- High energy dogs that are very independent with a lot of
personality. They are explorers, and should either have a fenced yard
or be walked on a leash everyday. Schipperkes are always pure black. Most Schipperkes tails must be docked in such a way that there is no
discernable tail. Their coat is thick and slightly rough to the touch,
and very little bathing or brushing is needed to maintain it, although they
do shed. Their history is somewhat unclear - some feel that they are a
Spitz type dog, while others claim they are related to the Belgian Shepherd.
What is clear, is that they date back more than three hundred years in the
history of Belgium. Schnauzer, Giant -
The most powerful of the German Schnauzers, these dogs were developed by
increasing the size of the Standard Schnauzer. In German,
Schnauzer means "muzzle". First exhibited in Munich in 1909, they
were called the Russian Bear Schnauzer. Giant Schnauzers are
intelligent, protective, loyal, good with children and very reliable.
They are easy to train and respond best to firm, consistent training
with positive rewards. These dogs require lots of exercise.
Their coat consists of a wiry outer coat and a soft undercoat.
Groom weekly with a short wire brush. The soft undercoat can matt
if not groomed. They weigh 55 to 80 lbs. and stand 23-28" at the
shoulders.
Schnauzer, Miniature - The Mini Schnauzer's lineage includes Standard Schnauzer, Affenpinscher and
possibly the Poodle. These dogs are squarely proportioned with a long head and
bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows. They are perky, bright-eyed, loving and
intelligent. They are good with children and other dogs if raised with them
from puppyhood. Mini Schnauzers are good watchdogs and mouse catchers.
They love to run and enjoy being walked on a leash. Coat colors
are salt and pepper, black and a harsh black and silver. White is
not recognized by the AKC. Grooming needs are high. Comb and
brush daily, or the coat may become matted. They should be clipped
twice a year. These dogs weigh 10 to 18 lbs. and stand 12-14" at
the shoulders. Schnauzer, Standard - This German
native of some 500 years, is the original Schnauzer from which all other Schnauzer breeds
were developed. It stands an average of 19 inches at the shoulder and has a hard,
wiry coat. Above average grooming is required. The Standard Schnauzer makes
an excellent family dog and loves to get a lot of exercise.
Schnoodle - Schnoodles
are a cross between a Poodle and a Schnauzer. They are low-shedding
and Hypo-allergenic. Scottish Deerhound - This breed was developed hundreds of years ago
to hunt the Highland Deer, an animal the size of today's elk. In its native
country it was known as the Royal Dog of Scotland. The Scottish Deerhound is a
tall dog, sometimes as much as 36 inches at the shoulder, and has a shaggy grey coat. They are devoted family dogs who need a great deal of exercise in
safely enclosed areas.
Scottish Terrier - This dog
originated in Scotland where it is a country favorite. This breed stands a mere 10
inches at the shoulder and can weigh an average of 19 pounds. Its wiry coat
comes in black, wheaten, brindle, and gray colors. Above average grooming is
required to keep the Scottie looking great. The Scottish Terrier is a good watchdog
and is a very playful and active pet. Sealyham Terrier -
The Sealyham Terrier originated in South Wales in 1850
and was bred to hunt badgers by Captain John Edwards. A small compact
dog, they are capable of guarding your estate, home or apartment, but gentle
enough to entertain your grandchildren. White, often with spots on the
head and face, they are friendly, lovable, delightful clowns, with their own
sense of humor. Often called the couch potato of the Terrier world,
because they don't require as much exercise as most Terriers, they are
adventurous and make tireless companions. One major benefit for asthma
sufferers is that the Sealyham Terrier is non-shedding.
Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie)
- This breed
originated in Scotland where it was used on farms. Herding sheep as well as
protecting farm animals and home were the main chores for this pet. The
Shetland is an average-sized dog that measures an average of 15 inches at the
shoulder. Its long, double coat comes in a multitude of colors. The
Sheltie is a great family pet that can live in both rural and city surroundings. Shiba Inu - The Shiba Inu has existed
for centuries in Central Japan where it was used for hunting small animals. This
Spitz breed stands an average of 15 inches at the shoulder. It has a thick coat that
comes in various colors; black and tan, red and, red sesame are the most common.
This alert dog is great for guarding its family and home and adapts well to the city or
country.
Shih Tzu - This pet originated in the
country of Tibet where it was used as gifts to the Chinese. It was developed by
mixing the Lhaso Apso and Pekingese breeds. The Shih Tzu stands an average of 11
inches at the shoulder and its coat comes in a multitude of colors. Grooming is
above average. This breed is great for people who live in small places and is a great
companion. Shikoku - The Shikoku originates from Japan and was bred originally for large game
hunting including wild boar and deer. Its origins can be dated back to
antiquity. It was bred on the Japanese Island of Shikoku, located near
Osaka, from where it takes its name. This rare dog was designated as a
Natural Monument in Japan in 1937. The Shikoku originates from the Spitz
family of dogs which include the Akita, Hokkaido, Japanese Spitz, Kai, Kishu and Shiba. The Shikoku's coat is normally a shade of black,
brindle and red. The outer coat is normally coarse and short, the
undercoat is straight and dense. They stand 17-22" at the shoulder and
weigh 40-60 lbs.
Shiloh Shepherd - a recognized rare breed. Shilohs are like the dogs you remember as a child. They are a great companion an excellent protector. A strong body and sound
temperament in both smooth & plush coat. Siberian Husky - This breed has its
origins in the Chukchi breed-line of the Siberian Artic of some 3,000 years ago. The
Siberian is well known as a working dog, pulling sleds great distances and herding
reindeer. It can weigh up to 60 pounds. Its strong, rigid body is
covered by a thick, medium coat that comes in a variety of colors. This dog is very
loyal to its family and makes a great pet.
Silky Terrier - This breed is a native
of Australia and was developed by crossing Yorkshire and Australian Terriers. Over time, the Silky has developed into a breed that is ideal for people living in the
city because of its compact size. The breed has a silky, long coat that
is odorless, non-shedding, and requires
daily brushing. It stands an average of 10 inches at the shoulder and can weight up
to 10 pounds. Skye Terrier -
This breed originated in Scotland in the 1500's, making it one
of the oldest Terrier breeds. The Skye Terrier became well known throughout
England and the U.S. by the early 1900's. They were used for hunting otters,
badgers and weasel and are fearless, sturdy, well tempered and intelligent
little animals. Skye Terriers stand up to 10 inches at the shoulder and
have a long coarse coat which requires some grooming. Exercise is
minimal which makes it an excellent companion for city folk. They make
great watchdogs and are loyal companions and rambunctious playmates for their
family.
Sloughi - This sighthound
family member originated in Northern Africa where it was used to hunt rabbits, jackals and
other small animals. The Sloughi stands an average of 28 inches at the shoulder and
has an athletic look to its body. The breed's coat comes in shades of sand or fawn

Smooth Dachshund - These dogs are elongated and muscular with short legs. They have an
intelligent expression and carry themselves proudly. Dachshunds come in a
variety of coats: smooth, wire, and long hair. Smooth coats should be shiny,
sleek and uniform. Coat colors may be solid, bicolor, dapple, piebald or
brindle. These dogs do best with older, considerate children. They are
moderately protective and need exercise to keep fit. Standards weigh 15 to 25
lbs. and stand up to 10" at the shoulders. Miniatures weigh 9 to 10 lbs. and
stand less than 10" at the shoulders. Smooth Fox Terrier -
This breed originated in the British Isles and was developed for hunting
purposes. At one time all dogs that dug into the ground to chase foxes
were called Fox Terriers. It was not until 1850 that controlled breeding
began resulting in the breed of today. Each English county once had its
own Fox Terrier. These dogs were once classic working dogs, but today
they are mostly companion dogs. They can be obstinate and strong willed
and they are not easy to train. They make good watch dogs. Minimal
grooming keeps the smooth coat looking good. These dogs weigh 16 to 18
lbs. and stand 13-15" at the shoulders.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier - This Irish
native originated about 200 years ago when it was used as a hunting companion to hunt
small game. The SCWT has a light yellowish, soft coat that requires regular
brushing. It stands an average of 18 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 40
pounds. This dog is a fun-loving pet and makes a great family companion. South African Boerboel
- The South African Boerboel is a large, strong and
intelligent working dog that has been bred in Africa since approximately the
17th century. Various mastiff-type dogs from Europe as well as large dogs
from Africa contributed to the development of the Boerboels. Typical breed
qualities of the South African Boerboel show a remarkable resemblance with the
Syrian dogs of the period up to 700 BC. The Boerboel is well balanced with
well-developed muscles, has resilient movement; is an impressive and imposing
figure of strength. Male South African Boerboels appear more masculine and
females more feminine. Temperament wise, the Boerboel is reliable, obedient
and intelligent with good watchdog instincts. The Boerboel is also
self-confident and without fear.
Spanish Mastiff - This
Spanish native was used to guard herds and protect property. It has a very gentle
nature despite its large size. This breed comes in a variety of colors. Most common
are fawn, white and gray, and white and black. The Spanish Mastiff measures an
average of 27 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 135 pounds. Spinoni Italiano -
The Spinone Italiano is a rough-haired dog of Italian
origin and is thought to be a very old and established hunting breed. The Spinone
is a versatile hunting dog of ancient heritage with origins in northern
Italy. It has a very resistant thick skin and harsh coat well
suited to the field. The breed has been characterized as a dog
that does not hunt for themselves but for their master and is not too
fast in their speed while searching out game. Their gentle
disposition and docile temperament make them an excellent family
companion as well.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier - The
Staffordshire originated in England where it was bred for fighting. Since the
outlawing of the sport it has excelled from proper breeding by some breeders who knew that
the Staffordshire has many other good qualities besides fighting. It stands an
average of 15 inches at the shoulder. This breed comes in a variety of colors and is great
with children and family. Standard Poodle - Known as the
oldest of the three variety of Poodles is widely known as a retriever of waterfowl
throughout Europe. Its origin is either that of Russia or Germany. This
breed measures an average of 25 inches at the shoulder and is available in
black, brown, gray,
apricot, cream and white. The Poodle is a great family pet for both city and country
living.

Tibetan Spaniel - The Tibetan Spaniel
is considered one of the oldest breeds in the world. Its native land is Tibet where
it was used as a watchdog and to keep their master warm in the extreme cold. This
dog measures up to 10 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 15 pounds. It
requires daily exercise and grooming. This spaniel is a great family pet. Tibetan Terrier - Known as a
"good luck" or holy dog by lamas of the Lost Valley in Tibet, this breed was
first introduced to the United States in the 1950's. The Tibetan Terrier stands an
average of 15 inches at the shoulder and weighs up to 25 pounds. This dog requires
regular exercise and grooming. It makes a great house pet in both city and country
settings.
Tosa Inu - The Tosa is
a large, short-coated dog, with a stately manner and a robust, powerful and
agile body. The head is large and broad with a boxy muzzle, wrinkled,
pendulous flews and a clearly observable dewlap. The preferred color of the Tosa is deep, solid, rich red. A quality Tosa is not judged by its size, but
by its character. The mature female Tosa stands at least 21 3/4 inches and a
mature Tosa male stands at least 23 1/2 inches. A Tosa is not measured by
its weight. Toy Fox Terrier - Also known as the American Toy Terrier, these dogs may be physically small,
but these are robust little Terriers that retain all the passion of their Fox
Terrier ancestors. They think they are big and tough. Affectionate and loyal,
they are also stubborn, curious active and quick. The tail is docked short and
carried high. Their coat is short and thick and is usually white with black &
tan or tan markings. Grooming is minimal. These dogs are active and pretty
much take care of their own exercise needs. They weigh 3 1/2 to 7 lbs. and
stand 10" at the shoulders.
Toy Munchkin -
Considered the "ideal" pet for all types of lifestyles, the Toy
Munchkin is an intelligent dog which makes a great companion for almost
anyone. This breed stands an average of 5 inches at the shoulders
and weighs an average of 4 pounds. It comes in a variety of
colors. When this dog is properly shaved it resembles a small lion
with its pom-pom appearance. Toy Poodle - This
Poodle is the
smallest of the Poodle varieties. It measures up to 10 inches and never exceeds that
height. This Poodle type is for those people with less active lifestyles and small
homes or apartments. The breed makes an excellent watchdog and family pet. It
is great with children. This breed requires above average grooming and minimal exercise.

Weimaraner - This breed originated in
Germany where it was used for hunting and is known as the "gray ghost." The Weimaraner's hunting ability makes it able to hunt game big and small. This dog
measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder. It has a short coat which comes in
shades of gray and has some pigmentation. This dog makes a great pet that enjoys
family and taking walks.
Welsh Corgi,
Cardigan
- A small but hardy dog was found
centuries ago in the remote, misty green hills of Cardiganshire in Wales, this
"yard-long" dog was highly valued by his family as affectionate companion,
guard, general farm worker, and driver of cattle. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is
a long, low fox-like dog with large upright ears, a brushy tail, moderate
bone, and front legs slightly bowed around a deep chest. The average size is
handy, approximately twelve inches at the shoulder with females ideally
ranging from 25-34 pounds and males from 30-38 pounds. A big dog in a small
package, his temperament is based upon his original life as a companion and
valuable farm helper and guardian, all of which make him an adaptable and
outstanding house pet. Caring for his people (including children) comes
naturally to this intelligent, alert and responsible dog. Welsh Corgi, Pembroke - This breed is the most popular of the Welsh
Corgis. This dog has been popular throughout the British Isles for some time. It stands an average of 11 inches at the shoulder and has a medium-long coat. The most common colors for its coat are fawn, black and tan, and red with
white markings. Regular grooming is required and it makes a great family pet.
Welsh Springer Spaniel - This breed
are thought to have existed in Wales since before the Roman Empire. They have
remained isolated from the rest of the world and have been bred into a great dog. The
Welsh Springer Spaniel stands an average of 18 inches at the shoulder and weighs up to 45
pounds. This dog makes a great family pet and is especially fond of children. Welsh Terrier - This breed
originated in Wales around the 15th century. It was used to hunt small game and
vermin. This strong-bodied breed stands an average of 15 inches at the shoulder and
can weigh up to 20 pounds. Its hard, rough coat is mainly black or grizzle with some
tan markings. This dog is excellent around children and makes a great companion for
both young and old. West Highland
White Terrier - The
Westie is a Scotland Terrier family member closely associated with the Cairn Terrier. Hunters of foxes and badgers, this dog is known for its all white color

Longhaired
- These dogs are very elegant in appearance. They
have a moderately long head with a fairly wide back skull, very large, dark
eyes and a black nose. Unlike their short haired relatives, they do well in
cooler climates because of their long coat. These dogs are friendly,
intelligent, lively and affectionate. They are quite athletic and playful and
make good pets. They can be hyper without enough exercise. Longhaired
Whippets are not recognized by the AKC but are recognized by the CKC.
Grooming needs are minimal. These dogs weigh 15 to 28 lbs. and stand 18-22"
at the shoulders. White German Shepherd - Similar to the
traditional German Shepherd, these dogs are snow-white with black nose, eyes, lips, and
some have black nails. This breed measures an average of 26 inches at the shoulder. They have proven to be very good with children and are especially protective of women and
children. They make great watch dogs and home companions.
Wire Fox Terrier - This breed originated in Europe in the 1700's. These dogs typify the
ideal Terrier type. More popular than their smooth relatives, Wire Fox
Terriers did not appear in show rings until the 1870's. They were fashionable
in the 1930's, then went out of favor until recently when they re-emerged as a
"classic" English breed. These dogs are not easy to train and can be willful. They enjoy digging, one of the instinctive traits of this breed. They are good
with children when raised with them from puppyhood. They weigh 13 to 20
lbs. and stand 13-16" at the shoulders. Females are smaller than
males. Wirehaired Dachshund - These dogs are elongated and muscular with short legs. They have an

generations removed from a pure Wolf and the type of dog used in each cross
must be considered when defining a Wolfdog. Because of random genetics
